Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between proofreading, copyediting, and developmental editing?

Developmental editing, usually the first step in the editorial process, looks at big-picture issues such as character motivation, plot, and themes. Copyediting, the second step, is editing at the sentence level, suggesting revisions for consistency, clarity, word usage, and POV. Proofreading is the final pass in which errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar are corrected.

How do you determine your fees for editing and ghostwriting?

My pricing is based on the median rate ranges set by the Editorial Freelancers Association and is in line with industry standards. In both editing and ghostwriting, the old saying you get what you pay for is remarkably true: if you want the job done right, it might cost you a little more, but it will be well worth it. Some editors work for lower fees, but they cannot offer you the experience and expertise that I can.

What are your qualifications to edit my book?

I have been editing books in full-time and freelance roles for the last 20 years and have worked on just about every genre there is, both fiction and nonfiction. My 10 years of experience as a ghostwriter have also helped me learn so much about story development, characterization, and plot structure, which benefits my editing process greatly.

What kinds of books have you edited?

In fiction, I have edited romance, sci fi, fantasy, young adult, literary, thrillers, mystery/suspense, LGBTQ+, and more. In nonfiction, I have edited self-help/motivational, business, cookbooks, religious, academic works, and (my favorite) memoirs. I’ve been editing for a long time, so I’ve pretty much covered all genres.

What are your specializations?

Throughout my editing and ghostwriting career, I have worked most often with self-published authors, so I’m highly familiar with that particular journey. I always give self-published authors the same solid, dependable, and thorough editorial attention that a traditionally published author would get and am happy to share the knowledge of the process that I’ve gained over the years.

Do you have any favorite genres to edit or ghostwrite?

My absolute favorite in both areas is memoirs. Every person has a story—experiences they’ve lived, traumas they’ve survived, lessons they’ve learned—and it’s always a challenge as well as a privilege when I get to help them shape and polish that story while making sure it is told in their own voice. I once made a memoir client cry while reading her own story that I wrote—the highest compliment a ghostwriter could ask for.

How many books have you ghostwritten?

I have ghostwritten 50+ books covering a very wide array of formats and genres, from novels and short stories to self-help and motivational books, religious works, academic works, memoirs, and much more. As mentioned previously, I’ve been doing this a long time, so there isn’t much I haven’t written.

How long does it take to ghostwrite a book?

Ghostwriting an average-length book (between 60,000 and 80,000 words) should take between 12 and 15 weeks, depending on the amount of research needed, the pace at which installments are approved, and other factors.

Can I see a sample of your editing or ghostwriting?

Sure can! Samples are available on request ([email protected]).
